Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.) has taken the first step toward industrializing autonomous mining trucks. The first Volvo FH Autonomous has been assembled at the Volvo Buses plant in Säffle, Sweden, combining world-class manufacturing expertise with cutting-edge autonomous technology.
Renowned for decades of manufacturing excellence, the Säffle plant has successfully integrated V.A.S.’s advanced autonomous systems into the Volvo FH Autonomous—a truck specifically designed for autonomous hauling.
“This milestone is a testament to the combined strengths of Volvo Autonomous Solutions’ engineering and the Säffle plant’s manufacturing prowess,” said Cecilia Ekström, Head of Autonomy Enabled Vehicles and Machines, at Volvo Autonomous Solutions. “Transitioning from R&D workshop builds to factory assembly is a crucial first step in enabling large-scale deployment of autonomous trucks, ensuring OEM-grade quality and reliability for customers operating in challenging environments.”
The Volvo FH Autonomous is equipped with computation power and a comprehensive suite of sensors—including LiDAR, radar, IMUs, and cameras—engineered for higher-volume assembly and robust performance in demanding conditions. This accomplishment demonstrates the plant’s ability to meet the sophisticated requirements of autonomous vehicle production, leveraging its flexibility and commitment to quality.
“We are delighted to enter into a partnership with V.A.S. and proud that they recognize the expertise and experience at our Säffle plant,” said Thomas Persson, Manager for the Säffle plant.
The previous generation of the Volvo FH Autonomous is already in active commercial operation at sites such as Brønnøy Kalk in Norway, where they have hauled over one million tonnes, and at Boliden’s Garpenberg mine. This initial build at Säffle marks the beginning of a planned, gradual ramp-up of production, to meet the growing demand for safe and reliable autonomous haulage solutions across the Nordics.
