The Volvo VNL Autonomous

The Volvo VNL Autonomous is our flagship long-haul self-driving truck for the U.S. and the first to be built on our autonomous truck platform with redundant systems. Completely redesigned in 2024, it sets new benchmarks for safety and performance while delivering improvement in fuel efficiency.

    Safety with robust redundancy

True to Volvo’s DNA, every design and engineering decision for the new Volvo VNL Autonomous has been made with safety in mind. The Volvo VNL Autonomous therefore has redundant steering, braking, communication, computation, power management, energy storage, and vehicle motion management systems.

    Purpose-built for integration

Our world-class engineering teams work closely with partners such as Aurora and Waabi to deeply integrate the Volvo VNL Autonomous with industry-leading self-driving technologies that are intended to see further, think faster and act quicker.

    Purpose-built for commercial scale

Building a viable autonomous truck at scale requires extensive manufacturing experience and proven supply chains. The Volvo VNL Autonomous is assembled at Volvo's flagship New River Valley plant in Dublin, Virginia. The New River Valley plant, the largest Volvo Trucks facility in the world, brings decades of high-volume production experience and rigorous automotive quality processes, ensuring the Volvo VNL Autonomous is built for scale.

Redundancy in autonomous vehicles

While Level 4 automation doesn’t legally mandate redundancy, we at Volvo have never waited for regulations to prioritize safety innovations. For us, redundancy is an essential commitment—built in from the start—to promote safety and secure the future of autonomous transport.

In the Volvo VNL Autonomous we have added redundancies to certain parts, systems, and functionalities to enhance safety and reliability. By having redundant systems, autonomous trucks can continue to operate safely even if certain primary systems or components fail. These backups are essential for the safety of other road users and can be implemented at various levels, from hardware and software to communication and computation.
